The United full-back is enjoying a career renaissance after suffering a career-ending injury back in 2015 and signing a new deal at United is indeed the icing on the cake.
After recovering from the horrific injury, Shaw spent the next 24 months trying to win the trust of Jose Mourinho who heavily criticised the left-back for his perceived lack of professionalism and preferred the versatile Ashley Young at left-back.
Shaw started this season playing the final 12 months of his United career but thanks to injury, the English left-back started in United’s opening game against Leicester City and has since nailed down a starting berth in seven of eight league games this season.
The 23-year old is enjoying an impressive run of form this season and has won United’s player of the month for August and September already.
That run of form has seen the Manchester United left-back agree to a new deal worth up to £60 million over five years.
United confirmed that Shaw has signed a new five-year contract at the club and will take home £190,000 ($250,000) a week making him one of the Premier League’s highest earning defenders.
Shaw was snapped up by the Premier League outfit from Southampton in 2014 making him the most expensive teenager at the time after committing to a four-year deal with an extension option of one-year and the deal was due to expire at the end of the season with Shaw expected to leave the club for free.
United have now extended the defender’s deal keeping him at the club for much longer with a one-year extension option also included in the new contract.
After suffering a freak injury in 2015 and struggling with fitness issues and poor form in his first four years at old trafford, Shaw credits hard work for attaining his current level of success at the club.
“It’s been an odd four years for me” he said.
“There have been ups and downs. From signing today now it’s all about looking forward and to how much I can help the team and become a success again.
“If you look at my situation in the last year and a bit, you’d have thought this could have been impossible. But I worked hard, I wanted to be here and I wanted to make sure my future was here to help this club.”
Shaw said upon the signing the new contract: “I want to let everyone know that I will give everything I have to repay them and deliver success over the years to come.
“I’m still very young with a lot more to learn and I can’t wait to continue my progress under Jose Mourinho.”
Mourinho added: “Luke fully deserves this contract. He understood his development process, he has worked really hard at every level and he always believes in himself which is a great attribute to have.
“Luke is still young and is improving all the time and he must feel very proud of himself. I am delighted that we are keeping such a talented young English player with a bright future ahead of him.“
