FIFA The Best Player of the year winner, Luka Modric reveals that he can never play in the same team as Lionel Messi although he acknowledges the Argentine is one of the best players in the game’s history.
Having won the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Award and FIFA The Best Player Award, the Croatian has been ticked to be the favourite to landing the coveted Ballon d’Or prize which has been dominated by former Real Madrid teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi.
Speaking to France Football, the creative midfielder expressed his respect for Barcelona star forward and also declaring that they are better off as rivals.
He said: “I play against him, not with him. Obviously, Messi is one of the best players in history, but I will never play with him.”
There have also been rumours that Modric and Ronaldo’s relationship is sour. But the 33-year old Madrid maestro was quick to dismiss such reports.
“We spent six wonderful years in Madrid where we developed a friendship and mutual respect,” Modric asserted.
“Now he is gone, and we keep in touch, sending messages. And although some people are trying to say that this is not the case, I can say that we are still maintaining good relations.”
The two players will lock horns when Real Madrid travel away to Camp Nou for the El Clasico on October 28.
Modric last played against Messi in the World Cup wherein Croatia defeated the Argentines 3 – 0.
